Winter Hair Wars

Oh, the weather outside is frightful! Is your hair, too?! Don’t worry, we have all of the tricks on how to combat your winter-related hair issues!

BLAH, nothing is worse than the static of hair! What’s better than running a comb through your hair and having it shoot straight up like you’ve been electrocuted?? Thankfully there are a few old tips and tricks to calm the static! First of all, you’re going to need to invest in a carbon comb and boar bristle brush. Plastic combs and brushes tend to encourage the electric charges in your hair, which contributes to the static problem. Boar bristle brushes also help to spread out the natural oils in your hair, moisturizing the hair. Another unfortunate fact; the dirtier the hair the better so try to wash your hair as less as you can. Because of the amount of natural oil your scalp produces, it helps to moisturize the hair and removes the probability of static. So, become best friends with your favourite dry shampoo this winter! Using a light leave in conditioner or serum in your hair while damp also helps moisturize the hair and prevent static. And then there’s the dryer sheet method… for when you’re super desperate. Rub the dryer sheet over the fly-aways to stick them down. You can’t go wrong with smelling like fresh laundry!

Dandruff/ Dry Scalp
Dandruff is one of those things that people get embarrassed about yet it is SO common. There are many different kinds and severities of dandruff. Some dandruff is caused by a lack of sebum (natural oil) coming from the hair follicle which produces a dry, flaky dandruff. It can also be caused by an excessive amount of sebum being produced which causes a waxy dandruff. There are millions of natural remedies all over the internet such as apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, coconut oil etc but nothing can beat good ol’ aloe vera! Aloe vera’s soothing and healing agents help to calm and soothe the itch. Try massaging it onto your scalp before a shower. Here at Lucido’s, we swear by the Eufora Aloetherapy line. Their shampoos are sulfate and paraben free and based in pure, cold-pressed, pharmaceutical grade aloe vera! This line keeps the hair moisturized while healing and calming your scalp. Drug store brands such as Head and Shoulders contain zinc and sulfates which loosen the flakes on your scalp, but these shampoos are so drying on the hair and strip out any artificial colour that you have in your hair.

split ends

Frizzy Split Ends
Okay, let’s face it, NOTHING can totally banish split ends without a hair cut. But, like many people, if you’re terrified of taking any length off of your locks, there are some products out there that can aid in making your hair healthy again and prevent further damage. Inevitably, everything dries out in the winter. Fun fact: did you know that being indoors for an entire day with indoor heating can cause as much damage on your hair as being under a blow dryer all day?! How scary is that?! We’ve recently fallen in love with another line of Eufora’s; Beautifying Elixirs. I promise you, it is the holy grail of all damage remedy hair products! It works from the inside of the cuticle to help repair hair from colour damage, heat damage, etc. My absolute favourite in the line is the Elixir One (which is a styling product designed to repair the inside of the cuticle) and the Moisture Masque. They are both essential in keeping your colour vibrant and keeping your hair healthy!

Hopefully this helps you combat that dreaded winter hair! Happy New Year!
